COOL -SONIC FOUNDRY ACID PRO 4.0

There’s
one great thing about being a grade-A geek in today’s world
of computers: For a few, fleeting moments, you can pretend that
you’re cool. And isn’t that really what dabbling in
music is all about? I mean, as the son of celebrated playwright
Israel Horovitz, young Adam Horovitz knew he was destined to a life
as the nebbish son of an intellectual’s intellectual, virtually
assured that no girl would ever talk to him. So he became one of
the Beastie Boys.
At some point in his life, Tom Petty must have looked in the mirror
and thought "Jesus, I’m ugly... I’m never gonna
get laid. Wait... I know! Music!" Steven Tyler, Billy Joel,
Mick Jagger... all hastily-assembled humans who owe their sexual
identities to choosing music over, let’s say, food service.
But those were the days of yore. Now, every long-haired loser with
a soft spot for The Scorpions has his own band. It’s so passe.
Hip-Hop is the modern ticket to sexual Nirvana. Where else can a
guy name himself Puff Daddy, change it to the even more ridiculous
P. Diddy, and not only be considered a bad-ass, but get to bang
Jennifer Lopez?
Well, Sonic Foundry’s ACID PRO 4.0 (you were wondering when
I was going to get around to it, weren’t you?) can be your
ticket to becoming Mixmaster MC DMZ Sugarcube Ice Water - or whatever
- in the comfort, and confines, of your own crib, er, home.
Sonic Foundry describes ACID 4.0 as a "loop-based music creation
tool that allows professionals to produce original, royalty-free
music." This is a literal truth in that once you learn how
to use ACID PRO, it’s a really fantastic, powerful tool for
creating lots of different music. While you’re just screwing
around learning, however, ACID isn’t much more than a wokka-chikka-wokka
box... think ‘70s porn music. Or "Eye of the Tiger."
Still, if you’re willing to invest the time, ACID can produce
amazing results.
For those who’ve never dabbled with anything more high-tech
than a Casio keyboard, loop-based music creators like ACID let you
build all kinds of music (though the system is best suited for various
flavors of house and techno) without ever picking up an instrument.
Everything is based on cleanly-recorded, open-ended chunks of music
from a single instrument, the eponymous "loops." Once
you find a loop you like, you repeat it as needed through the song,
and then layer other loops on top of it. It’s like a musical
Lego set.
When you’re finished, you should have a polished, multi-layered
piece of dynamic-sounding music. And, with practice, you will. The
first time you try, though, no matter what loops you use or what
instrumentation, I guarantee you’ll end up with wokka-chikka-wokka.
As loop-crunchers go, ACID is undeniably one of the best. It has
the most intuitive interface, widest selection of available media
(not only does Sonic Foundry sell thousands of loops ranging from
studio musician samplings to star-powered collections from folks
like Mick Fleetwod, there are also hundreds of Websites selling
their own ACID loops), and most powerful and useful features.
As an update to the immensely popular ACID 3, version 4.0 is a must-have,
with a wide slate of new features. One of the best improvements
is the enhanced MIDI functionality. ACID 4.0 allows you to display
and edit MIDI files in a piano roll format, just like a sequencer.
The new MIDI piano roll editor allows you to draw new notes, and
makes it easier to graphically edit MIDI parameters. You can use
MIDI step recording to add events to your project without having
to use an external MIDI controller. MIDI tracks time-stretch perfectly
to any tempo, and can be rendered with effects just like audio tracks.
It’s no replacement for a full-bore MIDI sequencer and editor,
but it should come in handy for a vide variety of functions.
Another very cool feature is ACID 4.0's ability to encode music
in a 5.1 surround mix, and record it directly to DVD. ASIO driver
support is also included in ACID 4.0, which means high-end users
with ASIO-compliant audio cards can make use of these low-latency
drivers.
ACID PRO 4.0 is definitely a step up from PRO 3, with a full set
of worthwhile new features to make you the hottest DJ in the house.
